Lacquerware is a special craft to the area of Chiang Mai and Northern Thailand region, but its history in Thailand pulled back from the Ayutthaya period. Some people says that lacquerware also could be found in Myanmar and Burma, countries that are Thailand neighbor.

Three layers of varnish from the sumac tree brushed into the wood or rattan base and each layer is polished with charcoal. Then the fourth layer is added, and once again polished with charcoal. For the final touch, the material was written and then soaked in red dye for several days.

Nielloware, This is where the mixture of lead, copper and silver is rubbed into the engraved silver. This craft was first introduced to the region of southern Thailand from India, and then spread to the North. Nielloware used to decorate trays, betel boxes, vases, and other small objects.

Since long time ago, the term ‘chang sip mu’ (ten categories of craftsmen) always used to refer to various arts and crafts. The ten categories are painting, lacquering (coating), engraving on hard materials, engraving on objects that are soft, the product model, coating (padding), lathing, casting, sculpture and stucco.
