Lacquerware is a special craft to the area of Chiang Mai and Northern Thailand region, but its history in Thailand pulled back from the Ayutthaya period. Some people says that lacquerware also could be found in Myanmar and Burma, countries that are Thailand neighbor.
Three layers of varnish from the sumac tree brushed into the wood or rattan base and each layer is polished with charcoal. Then the fourth layer is added, and once again polished with charcoal. For the final touch, the material was written and then soaked in red dye for several days.
